Richard's Character
In the movie, "Miss Little Sunshine" the Hoover family goes through many challenges throughout the trip, which ultimately helps them grow. They overcome the many obstacles to get Olive to the beauty pageant and learn throughout it. However, Richard's development as a person stood out the most to me. In the beginning, the movie does a good (and I mean GOOD) job of portraying Richard as a very dislikable character. I mean every chance he got, Richard would just interrupt a conversation with some stupid side comment about his winner and loser concept. He comes off as annoying and arrogant, trying to constantly pressure Olive to be a winner to the point where she ends up crying to her Grandpa. These sort of acts gave me the assumption that he would stay the same throughout the movie and was just there to annoy me. But in the end he ended up being an ok guy. He went through a lot of stress in the family's road trip, which I didn't really pay too much attention to. He had to deal with the death of his dad, his van constantly breaking, and his business plan falling through. These stressful times help influence Richard's change of thinking and lifestyle. But it is not until the very end that Richard switches up completely. When the judges try to stop Olive's (interesting..) dance, Richard runs on stage and just tackles the guy. He doesn't care about being a winner anymore, or how embarrassing the thing he is about to do might be. He just wants Olive to have fun and finish her performance and even ends up dancing with her. This is the sort of thing that the old Richard would call a sad, loser move, but the new Richard simply does not care. He throws away his old robotic thinking process and does what he sees as right. With this, Richard's character as a whole does a complete 180 and somehow manages to end up as a likeable character for me.
